Spiritual Grounding, Centering, Clearing and Protection

What is grounding/earthing?

These notes are only guidelines to aid you on your own Spiritual path and as with all spiritual work it is often about finding your own Truth. If you disagree or feel uncomfortable with anything that is suggested here by all means find an alternative Truth that is acceptable to you.

Grounding/Earthing is all about the awareness that we are still in a physical body as well as endeavouring to become spiritual workers and beings.

Why is it so important that we ground/earth ourselves?

Below you will find a few ways in which being grounded can make such a difference to our everyday life:

  • Brings life in to matter and to be able to bring our healing abilities into the physical.
  • Increases balance and stability in our physical and our emotional state.
  • Helps bring acceptance that we are here to fulfil a purpose.
  • Brings strength.
  • Helps in creating a bridge between Spirit and matter.
  • Provides an outlet making the release (of energy) easier.
  • Allows the attainment of higher Spiritual levels.

As a healer it is very important to keep your patient grounded.

How will I know if I am grounded or ungrounded?

Below is a list of some of the more common symptoms of being ungrounded. Usually each individual will encounter the same one or two symptoms each time they are ungrounded.

  • Dizziness
  • Daydreaming
  • A feeling of being 'Spaced Out'
  • Feeling sick
  • Heart palpitations
  • Eyes flickering
  • Weight gain
  • Clumsiness
  • Static shocks
  • Falling asleep when meditating
  • Noise and light sensitive
  • Forgetful
  • Having brilliant ideas that never happen
  • Arguing and unable to get your point across

(Please note that many of these symptoms can also be linked to other physical conditions or illnesses, if in doubt always check with your GP. Light and energy work is complementary to general medicine and should not be viewed as a substitute.)

So how do I become more grounded?

Here are some things you can do to help bring you back down to earth:

  • Eating (hence sometimes the weight gain) - healthy & balanced.
  • Drinking water
  • Walking, especially in natural surroundings
  • Sports, yoga, tai chi etc.
  • Gardening
  • Animals eg. walking the dog
  • Being purposeful
  • Visualization of roots/colour (see below)
  • Carrying/working with crystals (see below)

All of the list above is fairly self explanatory with the possible exception of visualization and the use of crystals, so here is a quick guideline as to how you can use either of these techniques:

Visualization:
The easiest and most helpful thing to imagine when you are trying to ground yourself is tree roots! Just imagine you have great long sturdy roots coming from the base of your feet (which should remain flat on the floor during the visualisation), or, from the base of your spine if you are sitting directly on the floor. Just let these roots go right down in to the earth below and let them anchor you onto the earth. This is a very quick and efficient technique to remember when releasing energy such as static shocks from cars and supermarket trolleys!
Colour can also be quite helpful, deep earthy colours such as red, brown and terracotta are always good. Again just imagine that this colour surrounds you. You can imagine it as light or a cloak or blanket, whatever is easier for you.

Crystals:
Crystals can be very helpful in the grounding process. It is best to carry them in a trouser or skirt pocket (or sock if you can make it comfortable!).You must remember to cleanse and dedicate your chosen crystal for this purpose before using it. A small piece of tumbled stone will be sufficient to carry with you. Here is a list of a few easy to obtain crystals that could be used for this purpose:

Red jasper (most jaspers are good as grounders) Bloodstone, Hematite, Gold tigers eye, Carnelian, Garnet, Pyrite, Copper, Amber, Unakite.

GROUNDING, CENTERING and CLEARING

"Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life. Breathe in and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breathe out and bring the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself."
-- Morihei Ueshiba

Here are several things you can do to tune up your energy body and harmonize your chakra , aura and whole self. Physical ,emotional, mental, spiritual grounding and centering are very basic core  practices  in most  system of spiritual practice or personal development.   These  practices promote increased personal happiness and spiritual health.

GROUNDING

Any time you feel spacy or disoriented it is a good idea to ground and center yourself. The first step in many spiritual practices is to learn to ground, that is to connect yourself energetically to the core of the Earth Even when you wish to astral travel or meditate you will find that beginning from being grounded will help you with inner focus .
Whatever your beliefs are this simple practice can make a huge difference in your life. There are many techniques for grounding and it is wise to look for those that work best for you.
The essence of most methods is to relax and visualize yourself sending an energy cord or light beam into the earth from your root chakra (at the tailbone) and allowing it to reach the earth core allowing you to get energy from the Earth and return excess energy down the cord. The energy you send down the cord that is not your own is cleansed and used by the earth. Your own energy is cleansed and returned to you. there are spirit beings that thrive on clearing negative energy. A classic form of grounding  is to imagine roots growing into the Earth from your feet and spinal column or central energy channel . Some Traditions strongly prefer that you ground from the spinal center  and not from the feet. I follow the tradition of asking the Earth for permission and thanking her for her healing energy .

I often use a specific shakti or subtle energy frequency for grounding, essentially simply commanding grounding into the earth plane and also connection with the universal Spirit core (universal galactic center or seed, throne of God etc.)
You can run Reiki or another energy shakti with the  intention  that it ground you or assist you with grounding. Some energies work better than others for this purpose .

The visualization I most often use, when I use one, starts with dropping a cord of light from the heart, and or solar plexus, straight down the spinal channel to the center of the Earth. Or calling up a cord from the Earth  center, which some people find easier, and then flowing it up to the spiritual center (sometimes going through the Sun). I then expand it to be a tube, encompassing my entire basic aura.
Eating,  stomping your feet placing your hands on your thighs and intending to ground are some other methods there are dozens of different techniques and meditations for grounding and centering because these practices are a vital part of our personal well being.

 Connect to Source

You can also run a cord up  or make an energy connection  into the spiritual heart of the universe from your crown chakra while intending that you be aligned with the highest soul purpose while staying well connected to the physical plane.
That is you are contained within your self and connected to Earth and the physical and to spiritual source  at the same time in a harmonious balance with the universe

I always ground, center and clear before I begin a healing session or attunement in addition to connecting to the cosmic center and to activating the energies I am working with. I ground from my root chakra rather than from the legs because  I got bad cramps in the legs when I grounded from the feet. I send a cord to the earth core asking earth for permission I widen the cord into  a tube as wide as  my aura and send negative energies down  to be transformed to usable energy for the Earth as well as calling up energies from Earth I send up to galactic universal center. Some people feel best when they call the Earth energy up and call the cosmic energy down rather than sending up and down.

CENTERING
This is a way to self awareness and owning yourself and your energy .You place your attention at your spiritual and personal center  and call in your energies and release any energy and programs that is not yours this is a starting point for any spiritual exploration
knowing yourself and feeling your own integrity and wholeness . Many if not most people do this before they ground I do this both before and after To center yourself. Bring your attention and energies into yourself and balance them within yourself, a spiritual  " Pull yourself together," as it were. Bring your attention into
the center of your head. you may visualize a sphere in the center of your head. Many people who are active in Martial Arts or Chi Gong center in the hara a spiritual energy center about an inch below  the belly button. Some people center in the heart . the location you choose is the place where you feel you are balanced and contained where ever you are firm in your awareness of self.

I also visualize all my chakras firmly connected to the central channel, and working optimally, as well as all my energy channels

inside and outside my physical being, clear filled with light, and balanced and harmonized, combining grounding with clearing and centering and harmonizing . chakra balancing and meditation are two other valuable basic tune up practices

What is Protection and why do we need it?

(These notes are only guidelines to aid you on your own Spiritual path and as with all spiritual work it is often about finding your own Truth. If you disagree or feel uncomfortable with anything that is suggested here by all means find an alternative Truth that is acceptable to you.)

As Human Beings we are all placed on this earth in a physical body. Many of us may choose to do the work of Spirit and therefore become aware that there is much more to life than just a physical body.

As we become in tune with ourselves and those around us we realise that everything and anything is made up of energy.

I'm sure we have all been aware of standing in a queue and feeling uncomfortable as someone steps in to our space. This is them invading our aura (energy field), and if our energy field is unprotected we will pick up on any energy that they may be giving out.

This energy can be both positive and negative and it is important for us to learn that we can pick up and take on board this energy especially as we start to develop our intuition and spiritual awareness. We become more sensitive to the energies that constantly surround us, and it then becomes important to know what we should do to avoid becoming susceptible to any negativity that we may encounter.

The more spiritually aware and intuitive we are the more sensitive we become to all the energies around us. We especially need to be aware of protecting our energy fields when dealing with other people as a healer/medium or clairvoyant for example. We need to make sure that we don't take on any unnecessary emotions/problems that the client may have brought with them.

How will I know if I am protected or not?

Being unprotected normally manifests itself within the emotional and spiritual bodies. Below is a list of some symptoms you may feel if your energy field is unprotected:

  • Irritable/losing your temper
  • Drained
  • Nightmares
  • Easily influenced by others
  • Threatened/defensive
  • Fanatical about someone
  • Feeling other peoples emotions/pain
  • Bumping into people
  • Copying or living your life through others
  • On a physical level you can feel pain in the back of your neck, solar plexus (pit of stomach), or wrists.

So how do I build up my protection?

You can build up and protect your own energy field in a number of ways. Here are a few easy examples to follow:

  • Keep fit and well
  • Drink lots of water
  • Wear protective colours - for example gold, silver, violet or blue
  • Wear or carry crystals with a protective quality - for example Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Sugilite, Laramar, Gold Tigers Eye and Hawks Eye (blue tigers eye) for psychic protection.
  • Wear or use protective symbols - for example The Egyptian Ankh, Rune symbol, Star of David (six pointed star), Circle, Egg, Pentagram (five pointed star, especially for Wiccans/Pagans), Pyramid or Cross. Symbols are very personal things, so only wear or carry what feels right for you and what you are comfortable with.
  • Visualization - for example a good exercise is to imagine you are sitting in an egg of light. The base of the egg is sitting just below the floor (so you are grounded) and you are surrounded in your egg by a lovely protective colour (gold, silver, violet or blue). You make sure that your eggshell is solid so that no negative energy can penetrate it. Any negative thoughts/emotions that you may have will not get out and no negative thoughts/emotions from others will be allowed in. In turn each negative energy or thought pattern will hit the eggshell and slide down it into the ground to be transmuted in to positive energy.

How the Root Chakra Relates to Money Matters, Survival and Abundance

Of the seven major chakras in the body, the root chakra is most closely connected to money matters, survival and abundance issues. The information we carry in this energy center determines how we attract and distribute financial wealth, how we relate to work and career, and how trusting and prosperous we are in life.

When our root chakra is balanced with our own energy and information flowing through it, we feel grounded and connected to the earth, trusting and abundant, and we know how to take care of ourselves materially and financially. This grounding support creates a foundation for the other six chakras. For a brief description of each of the chakras, read the article Understanding the Chakras and their Purpose.

For additional resources on chakra balancing read, The Book of Chakras: Discover the Hidden Forces Within You. And for tips on how to fully own, heal and balance your first chakra, read on.

Root Chakra Healing and Balancing

The root chakra or first chakra is located at the base of the spine, between the ovaries in a female and a bit lower near the prostate in a male. It spins and vibrates at a certain frequency, sending energy flowing through it from front to back. The first chakra is directly connected to a grounding cord that flows to the center of the planet, creating a connection to the earth which supports a person to release tensions, emotions, problems and foreign energy (other people’s judgments, emotions, and problems) out of their space.

When fully owned, energy flows easily through it supporting all the organs and bodily functions located near it. You feel safe, secure, trusting, supported and financially abundant. Your survival instincts are intact and you are able to handle money matters easily. If not owned, there may be trust issues, financial problems and feelings of insecurity or scarcity.

Here are three simple tools to help you own, heal and clear your root chakra.

1. Own your chakra with awareness. Being aware that you have a chakra with energy flowing through it will support you to own and clear it. Close your eyes and bring your awareness into the center of your head, back from your analyzer which is in the forehead area (this will support you to see and sense the energy rather than think about it). Place a hand over the front of your first chakra. Take a few minutes to simply breathe and connect with the energy and information flowing through this energy center. Set an intention to own this chakra for yourself.

2. Heal your chakra with love. Pure love is high vibration that supports all healing. With eyes closed, center within and touch into the vibration of love. It may help to think of someone or something you love, but then let that go and focus on the feeling of love as it flows through your heart and body. Bring this loving energy into your root chakra. Let it flow from front to back; mending, soothing and healing any blocks or disruptions in this energy center.

3. Clear your chakra with presence. With all of your own spiritual energy in your chakras there is no room for anyone else’s information, beliefs or judgments. Close your eyes, find your center, and say hello to yourself as a spiritual being bigger than your mind and body. Then bring all of your awareness into the center of your first chakra. Imagine you, a spiritual being, sitting in the middle of this energy center. From a place of stillness and neutrality, notice what is going on in this chakra. Tune into what is your truth and highest information about money matters, survival and abundance. Then notice what is not your truth, your information or your energy. Simply say hello to this foreign energy and move it out with your presence. Doing this from a place of non-resistance, ease and amusement will help you to fully own and clear this chakra.
